WHAT IS PILATES?

“Pilates is for the person who wants to look and feel better, who wants to function at an optimal level, pain free, who seeks balance in life and who wants to change their life for the better. Pilates is for everyone and anyone.”
R Isacowitz, founder of BASI PILATES

Pilates is a full body work out which develops every aspect of physical fitness and was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. His method originated from his belief in encouraging the use of the mind to control muscles, and focus the attention on core postural muscles to help keep the human body balanced, thus providing support for the spine.

Practised regularly Pilates will give you an incredible sense of wellbeing and the following benefits:

  • improves posture
  • improves mind/body awareness
  • greatly increases flexibility
  • strengthens, stretches and tones all muscles
  • improves circulation
  • prevents injury and reduces stress

For those of you that are already fitness enthusiasts it is your core strength that provides you with the power that enables you to perform. Regular Pilates is one of the greatest ways to maintain that core strength.

In everyday activities like using the computer, watching TV or driving we misuse our bodies. Pilates can teach us to carry out these tasks safely without causing imbalance, muscle strain or back ache.

“Pilates not only offers a bridge between mind and body, between everyday life and optimal performance, between rehabilitation and healthy movement; it also offers a system that when used to its full potential can enhance every aspect of life.”
R Isacowitz, founder of BASI PILATES
